Vishakhapatnam: YSRCP president YS Jaganmohan Reddy was on Thursday stabbed on his arm by unidentified assailant at the Vishakhapatnam Airport.

According to reports, Reddy was on his way to Hyderabad when the perpetrator, posing to be his supporter, attacked the former on the pretext of taking a selfie with him.

The attacker was immediately detained at the airport by the police. Reddy suffered minor injury on his left arm and was given first aid at the airport.

Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu condemned the “cowardly attack” and said that he has ordered probe into the incident, adding that the guilty will be punished.

“Shocked by attack on Mr Jagan Reddy,Asked all agencies to investigate matter thoroughly, including @CISFHQrs . Asked secretary civil aviation to fix responsibility. I strongly condemn this cowardly attack,we will punish the guilty.Investigations are underway, started immediately (sic),” tweeted Prabhu.

The YSRCP chief was waiting at the airport’s VIP lounge when the attacker came and insisted on taking a selfie with him. When the politician obliged, the accused came near him and stabbed him with a sharp metal object.

NDTV cited police saying that the accused said that he attacked Reddy as he did not wanted him to come to power.

According to reports, the perpetrator works as a waiter in a canteen at the airport. However, there is no confirmation on the same as of now.

Meanwhile, the YSR Congress alleged conspiracy by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government. Taking to Twitter, the party said, “Clearly, it is the government’s failure to provide security for the opposition leader.”

The party raised questions over the security provided to Reddy at the airport.

On the other hand, the TDP termed the allegations by the YSR Congress as “unfortunate” and said that the security at the airport is supervised by a central agency. It, however, said that a detailed investigation will be carried out in the matter.

Taking to Twitter, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi condemned the incident and called upon Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu to probe the matter.

“I strongly condemn the cowardly attack on @ysjagan this is a major security lapse which must be probed @sureshpprabhu how can a person bring a dagger inside the airport, and in a lounge ,politicians are vulnerable with this NEW phenomenon of selfies (sic),” said Owaisi.
