The Jammu and Kashmir Police Friday activated an AI-based facial recognition system designed to track down terrorists, history sheeters and other criminal elements elements along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police Friday activated a state-of-the-art AI-based facial recognition system designed to track down criminals, terrorists, and other inimical elements along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. As per an official release, the technology was activated at the Navyuga tunnel in Ramban district and marks significant stride towards bolstering security measures on Kashmir’s only all-weather motorable highway.

Officials said the advanced AI-based technology is specifically designed to track individuals involved in criminal activities, including terrorists, over-ground workers (OGWs), absconders, history sheeters, thieves, and drug peddlers.

“The advanced AI-based facial recognition system has been set up and activated at the Navyuga tunnel’s checkpoint in Banihal, marking a significant stride towards bolstering security measures,” they said, asserting that the implementation of the revolutionary system is a “pivotal step in the region’s commitment to ensuring public safety and combating crime effectively”.

Emphasising the significance of the Artificial Intelligence-based technology in the swift detection and apprehending criminal elements, including terrorists, they said the system will play a crucial role in in “maintaining law and order within the community” due to its ability to identify a range of threats, from terrorism to local crime.

The AI-based facial recognition system is an integral part of smart policing initiatives, they said.
