New Delhi: With the severe inclement weather continuing in Jammu and Kashmir, an avalanche has on Monday hit 3 houses at Dasi Baktoor village of Gurez in Bandipora district. The rescue team, however, has rescued five people so far. And the rescue operation is still going. More details in the matter are awaited.

A similar incident had happened in December last year when jawans of the Indian Army were hit by an avalanche in the Tangdhar region of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir.

In yet another incident in November last year, at least four soldiers, including two porters, were killed after an avalanche struck the Army positions in the Siachen Glacier. The avalanche had happened at an altitude of 18,000 feet above sea level.

The hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir are witnessing heavy to heavy snow fall for past one week. And the snowfall has thrown the normal life out of gear in the Valley and also forced cancellation of all flights to and fro Srinagar airport.

Many parts of the Jammu and Kashmir on Monday received moderate to heavy snowfall and locals believed that it brought relief to them from intense cold conditions.

Reports suggest that the plain areas received light to moderate snowfall and sleet, the higher reaches of the valley experienced heavy snowfall.

As per updates, all the inbound and outbound flights to Srinagar were cancelled due to poor visibility and accumulation of snow on the runway. Because of the snowfall, the electricity supply in many areas has been snapped.
