Kanwar Yatra: A parking lot employee was allegedly attacked with swords by a group of four Kanwariyas following a dispute over parking fee in New Tehri district of Uttarakhand. The accused men, who had parked their tractor-trolley at the parking lot, got into a heated argument with the staffers over parking and attacked him with swords, a senior official said, adding that the four Kanwariyas– all residents of Sonipat, Haryana, have been arrested.

“After visiting the temple, when the kanwariyas reached the parking lot, Balam Singh Bisht, Ajay and Subhash asked for parking fee. There was an argument and the accused attacked Bisht with swords,”said Muni ki Reti police station in-charge Ritesh Shah.

Shah said Bisht suffered a serious injury to his head and is undergoing medical treatment at a hospital.

Following the incident, the parking lot’s contractor Rahul Gupta filed a complaint against the accused, based on which a case was registered against the four men.

The accused, all of whom have been arrested, have identified as Giri Naga Baba (40), Divya alias Deepu (19), Rajat (19) and Arun (18), all residents of Haryana’s Sonipat, the officer said on Sunday.

The annual Kanwar Yatra officially kicks of at the start of the Hindu calendar month of ‘Sawan’, which begins on July 22, 2024 (Monday).

Kanwariyas are devotees of Lord Shiva who travel to collect water from the Ganga from states it passes through. They use the water to perform the ‘jalabhishek’ of the deity in temples in areas they hail from during the Hindu holy month of Sawan.
