Kerala Lok Sabha Election 2024: Malappuram Lok Sabha Constituency is one of the 20 Lok Sabha Constituencies in Kerala. It is one of the first parliamentary constituencies created in Independent India and since its inception, the Malappuram Lok Sabha seat has been an undisputed stronghold of the regional Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), with the Communist Party of India (Marxist), winning just once (2004 elections), since the 1952 Lok Sabha polls.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, incumbent IUML MP P.K. Kunhalikutty, retained the seat for his party by defeating V.P. Sanu of the CPI-M by a thumping margin of 2,60,153 votes.
Amidst a good 75 percent voter turnout Kunhalikutty secured 5,89,873 votes, while his rival could only manage 3,29,720 votes.
Later, in the 2021 bye-polls, IUML’s Abdussamad Samadani once again reasserted IUML’s dominance from the Malappuram Lok Sabha Constituency, when he handed another defeat to CPI-M’s V.P Sanu by a margin of 1,14,615 votes.
Elections for the Kozhikode Lok Sabha constituency will be held on April 26, 2024– Phase 2 of Lok Sabha polls– while votes will be counted on June 4 and results declared on the same day.
ET Mohammad Bashir – Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)
VA Vaseef – Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M)
Dr Abdul Salam- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
(Note: The candidate(s) list will be updated as and when they are announced.)
Date of polling: April 26, 2024
Date of counting/results: June 4, 2024
The Malappuram seat is an absolute bastion of the IUML owing to its large majority of Muslim voters, something which can be gauged by fact that all three candidates in fray from their respective parties are Muslims. Even the BJP has fielded a Muslim candidate (Dr Abdul Salam) in hopes of making some inroads in Kerala in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
Nonetheless, the CPI-M is expected to put up a tough fight to the IUML even though national parties like the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are not likely to make much of an impact here.
Lok Sabha Elections for all 20 Parliamentary seats in Kerala will be held in a single phase on April 26- Phase 2 of the seven-phased Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
