New Delhi: In a major development that promises to boost India’s railway infrastructure, the Indian Railways has completed the construction of India’s most powerful railway engine, which will start running on the tracks within the next month. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw himself visited the factory in Gujarat’s Dahod to review this historic project. To recall, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of this locomotive factory in 2022. It is important to note that the engine has been completely developed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. This factory is specifically manufacturing high-power engines for freight trains, and the first engine is now fully ready.
9000-Horsepower Engine to Boost Train Speed
The engine has the capacity to haul up to 4500 tons of freight and has 9000 HP (horsepower)
Indian Railways is upgrading the existing 6000 horsepower engines to 9000 HP under its railway electrification plan
Siemens Engineering Company will manufacture 1200 electric engines under this project in Dahod, Gujarat, with an investment of over ₹20,000 crore.
These high-speed engines will help increase the speed of freight trains from the current 20-25 km/h to 50-60 km/h.
On which routes will these engines be deployed?
According to the reports, these powerful engines will primarily be used on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) and other important classified freight segments of the railway. Additionally, these engines are also being developed for the export market. They will help elevate Indian Railways’ freight transportation capacity to new heights, thereby accelerating the country’s logistics and trade system.
