New Delhi: After long exhausting court trials and delays, the justice was finally delivered to Nirbhaya. The gangrape and murder case convicts —-Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh and Pawan Gupta—were hanged on Friday 5:30 AM, seven years after the gruesome incident shook the nation’s conscience. This execution of the convicts took place at Delhi’s Tihar jail amid high security.
“Four men executed simultaneously for first time in Tihar history,” Tihar jail officials said in a statement.
Heaving a sigh of relief, Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi, said that it took 7 years but justice has finally been delivered to her daughter.
At the time of execution, a handful of local people were also assembled outside the Tihar Jail to pay their tribute to Nirbhaya.
Regarding the divorce plea of convict Akshay Singh’s wife, the High Court said that the pendency of a divorce plea was not relevant to stay his execution along with three other convicts.
The case pertains to the gruesome gangrape of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, later dubbed as Nirbhaya, by six men in a moving bus on December 16, 2012. Her male friend was also assaulted following which the duo was thrown on the road. She succumbed to her injuries thirteen days later.
The attackers inserted rod inside her vagina and ripped her intestines apart. The brutality of the crime shook the nation to the core, leading to wide-spread protests and a drastic change in the country’s rape laws.
