Gujarat Accident: Close on the heels of a Pune Porsche crash which left two young IT professionals dead late last month, a similar incident was reported Saturday from Gujarat’s Ahmedabad where a 17-year-old teen allegedly hit a 16-year-old girl with his older brother’s SUV car, leaving her with critical head injuries.
According to the police, the minor boy was allegedly driving a Toyota Fortuner, reportedly owned by his older brother, and ran over the 16-year-old victim near her house on Friday evening.
Giving details, an officer said the girl was walking down the road to a market near her house in Thaltej area on Friday evening when the accused hit her with his SUV before losing control of the vehicle and crashing into a nearby empty plot of land where he was seized by locals and handed over to the police.
“The accused boy who was allegedly driving the SUV has been detained. Prima facie, he was not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” said N-division traffic police inspector KP Sagathiya.
She said the 16-year-old victim received grievous head injuries in the accident and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
“According to eyewitnesses, the Fortuner was being driven at high speed when the accident occurred. After hitting the girl, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it entered a vacant plot of land nearby. Local people cornered the driver and called up the police,” the officer said, adding that two friends of the juvenile driver were accompanying him in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The Fortuner was found to be registered in the name of the minor’s elder brother, the police officer said, adding that the accused has been detained.
“He was not been found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Sagathiya said, adding that further investigation was underway.
The incident comes close on the heels of the Pune Porshe horror, wherein a minor boy allegedly ran over two IT professionals, a man and a woman, after hitting their motorbike with his expensive car in the early hours of May 19 in Kalyani Nagar area of Pune city.
The teen, reportedly the son of an influential businessman, was initially let off by the court with a mild slap-on-the-wrist esque judgement, asking him to a “write a 300-word essay on accident prevention”.
However, following nationwide outrage, the boy and his father were booked by the Pune Police, who have claimed that the teen was drunk at the time of the accident and have petitioned to try him as an adult.
