New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi was unanimously re-elected as the chairperson of the Congress parliamentary party on Saturday. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge proposed Sonia Gandhi’s name as the chairperson of the parliamentary party at a meeting of the party MPs.
Congress leaders Gaurav Gagoi, K Sudhakaran, and Tariq Anwar seconded the proposal.
Sonia Gandhi, after the re-election, appreciated the party’s performance in the Lok Sabha Election saying the party demonstrated resilience again.
“It was up against a mighty and malevolent machine that was doing its utmost to destroy us. It tried to cripple us financially. It carried out a campaign against us and our leaders that was full of lies and defamation. Many wrote our obituaries,” Sonia Gandhi said.
Sonia Gandhi further added, “But under the determined leadership of Khargeji we persevered. He is an inspiration to all of us. His commitment to the party organization is truly extraordinary and we all have to learn from his example.”
Mallikarjun Kharge after the meeting’s conclusion said, “It is good she (Sonia Gandhi) has been re-elected as CPP and she will keep guiding us.”
Shasi Tharoor also spoke about the re-election, “I think there was not even a question about it. We all wanted her back. She has been leading and guiding the party for a very long time and there was no question of any other name being considered. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge himself nominated her.”
Earlier this year Sonia Gandhi was elected as Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan.
Earlier on Saturday, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) passed the resolution that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi should be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha.
The recent result of Lok Sabha Election 2024 has been a success for Congress as the party upped its seat count total to 100 from 52 in 2019. The party became the second largest party behind the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who won 240 seats.
Speaking at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting Kharge said, “People have spoken against the dictatorial and anti-democratic ways of the ruling party. It is a decisive rejection of the politics of the last 10 years. It is a rejection of the politics of divisiveness, hate and polarisation,”
