Osmanabad, March 27: In support of Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad, Shiv Sena on Monday has given a shutdown call in Osmanabad, the constituency from which he is elected. Gaikwad, who thrashed an Air India staffer, admitted to hitting an airline staffer 25 times with his shoes and attempted to throw him out of the aircraft on Thursday. National carrier, Air India had put him on a no-fly list and had banned him as a passenger on its flights. Other airlines too followed Air India’s move as he refused to apologise for the inhumane incident. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena supporters held bike rally in Maharashtra’s Omerga in support of party MP Ravindra Gaikwad.
The party is likely to bring privilege motion over issue of MP Ravindra Gaikwad being put in a no-fly list of all airlines. Gaikwad, on Thursday, was caught on camera abusing and roughing up a 60-year-old duty manager of Air India for not being able to fly business class in an all-economy Pune-Delhi flight. He nearly pushed the staffer off the ladder and demanded that the airline should apologise to him. He also demanded that an inquiry should be initiated into the video which has gone viral.

Ravindra Gaikwad was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014 from the Osmanabad constituency in Maharashtra. 57-year old Gaikwad has also been a two-time MLA from Umarga constituency in Osmanabad district from where he was victorious in 1995 and 2004 Assembly elections. Gaikwad, who faces a case of the assault said that he would take legal action against Indigo and Air India for cancelling his confirmed tickets. Gaikwad was forced to take a train from Delhi after all major airlines in the country put him on their no-fly list.
The Shiv Sena MP on Sunday claimed that he was asked by a top party leader not to speak with the media over the issue, PTI reported. “A senior Sena leader ordered me not to speak with media till Wednesday (March 29) and so I am not coming before the media”, he said. He also threatened legal action against the national carrier and said he has not gone into hiding and will be present in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Talking about the incident, Shiv Sena spokesperson Manisha Kayande said “Party has taken the incident (of AI staffer’s assault) seriously. We do not subscribe to such instances.” Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said such regrettable incidents should never happen again. “We are also working on creating institutional mechanisms to check undesirable flight behaviour or unruly passengers,” the minister said in a series of tweets.
Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Friday said that “suo motu action” cannot be taken against Shiv Sena member Ravindra Gaikwad for assaulting an airline staffer, but stressed that “no MP is allowed to misbehave with anyone”. “No one is allowed to misbehave with anyone, even if he is an MP, a common man or any official. As a mother, I teach children not to misbehave with people,” Mahajan said.
