New Delhi, March 27: Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar at his residence on Tuesday. The West Bengal CM reportedly discussed the current political situation and ways to take on the Narendra Modi government inside and outside the Parliament. Besides the NCP chief, Mamata also met Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut.
Mamata also met RJD MP Misa Bharti in Parliament. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Banerjee said,”When political people meet then, of course, they will discuss politics, there is nothing to hide in that. The Lok Sabha election of 2019 will certainly be very interesting.” Mamata also said that she could not meet former Congress president Sonia Gandhi as she was unwell.
Meanwhile, Mamata has said that she will be meeting more political leaders on Wednesday, even ones from the BJP. The West Bengal Chief Minister has said that she will meet senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha, Arun Shourie and others tomorrow. “Will certainly go if they (Mayawati-Akhilesh Yadav) call us for a meeting to Lucknow,” she added.
The meeting came minutes after Pawar had denied a dinner meeting with Mamata. “There is no meeting, there is no dinner,” Pawar had said earlier in the day, in response to a question if there will be a dinner meeting with the West Bengal CM.
A strident critic of the BJP-led central government and its policies, Banerjee had recently called for unity among all the anti-BJP forces to defeat the saffron party in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
A few days back, the TMC chief had also met TRS president and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, who called on her to discuss the process of setting up a federal front against the BJP-led government at the Centre.
Mamata Banerjee is on a four-day visit to the national capital. She is expected to meet various Opposition leaders, including UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal. On being asked about her meeting with Sonia, the TMC chief maintained that the visit will be strictly personal as she was concerned about Sonia Gandhi’s health.
