Kolkata, Apr 22: Two Class 4 students were allegedly raped by a teacher in a classroom for four consecutive days after the school hours in Raiganj of North Dinajpur district in West Bengal. The 35-year-old accused, who is married, is reportedly absconding. The shocking incident at a state government aided primary school came to light amid outrage over Kathua rape and murder case.

According to the police, the teacher allegedly raped the two in a classroom for four days this week after school hours and threatened the victims with dire consequences if they disclosed it to anyone.

One of the victims told her parents about the ordeal on Friday after they asked her the reason for her unwillingness to go to school. She also named the other victim, the police disclosed. Her parents then went to the house of the other victim who corroborated the incident.

The victims underwant a medical examination at the Raiganj district hospital on Saturday.

The parents of both the girls have lodged an FIR at Raiganj police station against the teacher. The accused teacher is on the run, police informed.

Earlier in December last year, in a similar incident, the Kolkata police had arrested two teachers of a prominent school for sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl. Identified as physical training teachers of the school – Abhishek Roy and Mafizuddin – had reportedly molested the kindergarten student inside school toilet. The victim reportedly returned home with blood stains on her uniform and was crying inconsolably. Her mother noticed that the girl was bleeding from the genital area. The child was later rushed to a government hospital, where doctors also confirmed that the victim was sexually assaulted.

Cabinet Approves Death Penalty For Child Rapists

The Union Cabinet on April 21 approved an ordinance to award death sentence to rapists of children below 12 years of age. In a number of measures to strengthen the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the promulgation of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018, for effective deterrence against commission of rape, thereby instilling a sense of security among women and especially young girls in the country.
