New York, July 3: An area of central park in New York has been closed and evacuated following an explosion that injured one person. WCBS 880 reported that the injured victim was accompanied by three young men from the Washington DC area at the time of the incident. One of the victim’s friend said, “I don’t know what happened. An eyewitness who was present at the spot said that the injured man was trying to climb the rock and stepped on something that ‘exploded’. The NYPD has been alerted about the situation and team of bomb squad has also arrived on spot. A team of sniffer-dog has been sent to the explosion site near the rock, while NYPD is investigating why explosion took place. The authorities are calling this a ‘possible amputation’ and the victim has been shifted to Bellevue.
Cops present at the scene suspected a mishap involving fireworks and said it did not appeared to be explosive device. The incident caused panic among visitors on Sunday morning. For few seconds local present at the spot thought some explosion has taken place and started running towards exit.
NYP chief has also been briefed about the situation who will be arriving at the spot in few minutes. The incident took place few days after the Orlando massacre in which more than 49 people died and many were reportedly injured.
