Kabul: A major blast was heard in Afghan capital Kabul, hours after US officials warned of the possibility of a terror attack, reports international news agency AFP. It was a rocket that “initial information shows hit a house”, a security official from the recently deposed government was quoted as saying by AFP. A rocket struck a neighborhood just northwest of Kabul’s airport today, killing a child, reports Associated Press quoting an Afghan police chief said.

Two witnesses said the blast appeared to have been caused by a rocket that hit a house in an area to the northern side of the Kabul airport but there was no immediate confirmation, news agency Reuters adds. Photos and videos of large plumes of smoke rising from a heavily congested residential area surfaced on social media soon after the blast took place.

Meanwhile, US carried out a military strike targetting suspected ISIS-K terrorists in Kabul, reports Reuters quoting two US officials. US airstrike targeted a suicide bomber in a vehicle who wanted to attack the Kabul international airport, reports The Associated Press quoting a Taliban spokesman.

“US military forces conducted a self-defense unmanned over-the-horizon airstrike today on a vehicle in Kabul, eliminating an imminent ISIS-K threat to Hamid Karzai International Airport. We’re confident we successfully hit the target,” Bill Urban, US Central Command spokesperson was quoted as saying. “Significant secondary explosions from the vehicle indicated the presence of a substantial amount of explosive material. We are assessing the possibilities of civilian casualties, though we have no indications at this time,” Urban added.
