The United States has once again deployed its powerful nuclear bombs in the NATO-member country, Britain. According to various media reports, these bombs have been placed at the Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath airbase. To accommodate them, new protective shelters have been built. This marks the first time in nearly two decades that the US has stationed nuclear weapons at this British airbase.
This move comes at a time when NATO countries are considering creating their own nuclear defense system, separate from the US Many European nations fear that America might withdraw from or even shut down its nuclear-sharing program. However, the exact reason behind the US decision to redeploy these weapons remains unclear.
The Federation of American Scientists, a group of nuclear experts, revealed this information about the US nuclear deployment in Britain. Recently, a significant number of drone flights were spotted in the area, drawing attention to the airbase. The scientists mentioned that there has been no official confirmation regarding the presence of nuclear bombs at the site. However, satellite images suggest the construction of protective shelters, likely meant to shield aircraft.
Reports say that 28 out of 33 aircraft shelters at Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath airbase have been upgraded, with six new shelters under construction. Satellite images also reveal that the US has stationed two squadrons of F-35 fighter jets at the base. Additionally, the U.S. has been upgrading several of its nuclear storage facilities across Europe. Earlier, NATO had confirmed that the British airbase was being upgraded for special storage purposes.
According to The Telegraph, the US is deploying nuclear bombs in Britain as part of its strategy to counter Russia, given the growing tensions between NATO and Moscow. Analysts believe this move is not surprising, as nuclear weapons and long-range missiles are being positioned in response to the evolving security landscape. Some experts also suggest that the deployment is aimed at countering China as well.
The US had previously removed nuclear bombs from this airbase in 2008. However, it is now deploying the B61-12 thermonuclear bomb, a newly developed and highly advanced weapon. This bomb is designed for devastating impact and has the potential to cause large-scale destruction.
