In Madagascar, an island nation located off the east coast of Africa, youth took to the streets last month to protest electricity and water shortages and inflation. These protests turned violent in recent days. The president was forced to leave the country after intense protests and violence, particularly in the capital, Antananarivo.
Opposition leader confirms Rajoelina’s
Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, the opposition leader in Madagascar’s parliament, confirmed Rajoelina’s departure on Sunday, October 12. He said Rajoelina made this decision after an army unit joined the protesters. He added that staff at the President’s Office informed him that the President had left the country. However, there is no information on Rajoelina’s whereabouts.

Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina has stated that his life was in danger in the country following the military coup, and that he left the country. After leaving the country, Andry addressed the nation on national TV from an undisclosed location late Monday night, October 13. He announced his departure but did not announce his resignation from the presidency.
Protests in Madagascar began on September 25 in protest against water and electricity outages. Since then, anti-government protests led by Gen Z have continued. The situation escalated when an elite military unit joined the protests on Saturday, October 11. The president left the country a day later on Sunday.

Doubts about how he left
After leaving the country, President Andry said in his speech that he was forced to find a safe place to protect his life. He did not say where he was staying in Madagascar or how he left. A French Foreign Ministry spokesman declined to comment on reports that he had left the country on a French military plane.
