Saudi Arabia, renowned for its desert terrain and extreme heat, has recently faced a series of unusual weather events. The country experienced snowfall, followed by severe flooding that caused widespread devastation. Earlier in January, heavy rains and floods in Mecca and Medina created significant challenges for pilgrims. Streets, vehicles, and homes were submerged, with water covering the region extensively.
The country is once again preparing for heavy rainfall. According to a report in Zee News Hindi, Saudi Arabia’s meteorological department has issued a warning for heavy rains, hailstorms, and strong winds, affecting areas from the holy city of Mecca to Medina and Riyadh.
According to the Zee News Hindi report, the National Center for Meteorology (NCM) of Saudi Arabia has predicted heavy rainfall across most of the country until Monday. Intense rain, hailstorms, and strong winds are expected to impact areas including the holy city of Mecca, Al Lith, Al Qunfudhah, and Riyadh. Additionally, parts of southwestern Saudi Arabia, such as Jazan, Asir, and Al Baha, are likely to experience rainfall. Some regions in the Eastern Province may also experience foggy conditions.
The weather department has issued a cautionary advisory urging citizens to stay alert due to the heavy rain and strong winds. The Saudi Civil Defense Directorate has recommended that the public remain in safe areas and avoid locations like valleys that may be at risk of flooding.
Earlier on January 8, heavy rains across Saudi Arabia, particularly in Mecca, Jeddah, Al-Baha, and Asir provinces, led to severe flooding. The images of the flood in the desert region quickly went viral across social media platforms. Earlier, in June, a deadly heatwave caused the deaths of over 1,300 people, many of them during the Hajj pilgrimage, due to the extreme temperatures.
In a statement, the Saudi government said, “The health system addressed numerous cases of heat stress this year, with some individuals still under care. Regrettably, the number of mortalities reached 1,301.”
