The missing AirAsia Flight QZ8501 that went down more than a week ago has finally been found in the Java Sea – but not the entire plane, only its tail. The search party is hopeful that the airplane’s blackbox will soon be recovered as well and the mystery of the crash will be out. Although the underwater search has almost come to an end with the discovery of parts from the plane including the tail at the bottom of the sea, the blackbox has yet to be found. Blackboxes provide evidence and the reason behind a plane crash. They store information regarding an aircraft’s speed, position of landing gear during the crash, pilot communication, etc. Rescuers had been looking for the AirAsia Flight QZ8501 underwater since December 28. The plane had 162 people on board including the crew, and some bodies have been recovered.
Tony Fernandes, AirAsia Chief Executive Officer, confirmed the news of Flight QZ8501’s tail being found in the water. He said on Twitter, “I am led to believe the tail section has been found. If right part of tail section then the black box should be there. We need to find all parts soon so we can find all out guests to ease the pain of our families. That still is our priority.”

Rescuers spotted the tail of the AirAsia in the Java Sea and confirmed the sighting of major wreckage after 11 days of the incident. The monsoon weather had led to a powerful current in the sea, but searchers managed to locate the plane’s parts. The first image tweeted by Tony Fernandes shows an upside down painted ‘A’ on a piece of metal. This photo was first released on BASARNAS, which shows the crashed plane AirAsia Flight QZ8501.
Smaller pieces of AirAsia Flight QZ8501, including seats and emergency doors, have been recovered earlier. The top priority of rescuers currently is recovering all decomposed bodies along with the blackbox. Until now, 40 bodies have been found but many other bodies are believed to be stuck inside the main body of the plane that is yet to be found.
But the main reason for crash of AirAsia Flight QZ8501 is still not clear. What happened during the two-hour trip, which caused the death of 162 people on board? Before the crash, pilot was informed to hold the air traffic control, as the plane was approaching threatening clouds. But he was denied permission to climb towards the higher altitude due to heavy air traffic.
