India-US Tariff Tensions: Amid the tariff tension between the United States and India, defence cooperation between the two countries is going to gain a new dimension. The deal for six additional P-8I maritime patrol aircraft for the Indian Navy is in its final stage. The major deal is worth USD4 billion. To finalise the deal, a delegation of US officials will reach India's national capital between September 16 and 19.
What Is The Role Of US Delegation In The Deal?
The high-level delegation will include officials from the US Department of Defence and Boeing. Officials from Office of the Under Secretary of Defence for Policy, Navy International Programs Office (NIPO), the Maritime Patrol and Recognition Aircraft Program Office and the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA). Officials of NIPO look after the global maritime partnerships and officials of PMA 290 assist in aircraft acquisition.

A high-level US delegation, including officials from the Pentagon, Boeing, NIPO, and DSCA, will visit New Delhi between September 16 19 to finalise the agreement.
The Indian Navy, currently using 12 P-8I aircraft, seeks six more planes to counter China's growing presence in Indian Ocean Region.
The P-8I aircraft can fly 8,300 km non-stop at 41,000 ft, and is equipped with anti-ship missiles, cruise missiles.
What Is The Growing Needs Of The Indian Navy?
Citing China's growing military influence in the Indian Ocean Region, the Indian Navy needs six more aircraft with surveillance and anti-submarine capabilities. The Navy currently has 12 P-8I aircraft and is also using MQ-9B drones for surveillance.
What Are The Major Features Of P-8I Aircraft?
P-8I aircraft is specifically designed for surveillance and detection of submarines in the ocean. The aircraft is capable of flying at an altitude of 41,000 feet and cover a distance of up to 8,300 kms in one go. It is also designed to carry anti-ship missiles, cruise missiles, light torpedoes and anti-submarine missiles.

The recent high tariffs the US has placed on India for purchasing oil from Russia do not affect the defence agreement. A joint statement released during Prime Minister Modi's visit to the US in February clarified that this deal is nearing completion.
