Amidst a labour shortage in Israel’s construction sector due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, over 6,000 Indian workers are set to arrive in Israel during April and May. This move comes as a collaborative effort between the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), finance ministry, and construction and housing ministry. A statement released by the Israeli government late Wednesday disclosed that these workers will be transported via an “air shuttle,” after the government agreed to subsidise chartered flights for this purpose.

The construction industry in Israel has historically relied on foreign workers to fill essential roles where local labour is insufficient. Notably, a significant number of 80,000 workers came from the Palestinian Authority-controlled West Bank and another 17,000 from the Gaza Strip. However, many had their work permits revoked amidst the conflict. The influx of Indian workers is poised to bolster the construction industry and support ongoing projects.

The statement was released after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a meeting at the PMO here amid an acute shortage of workers that has stalled several projects, causing concerns of increasing cost of living and also friction between various government bodies and businesses.

Last Tuesday, 64 construction workers from India landed in Israel as part of the agreement. Over the next few weeks, a total of 850 more workers are expected to arrive by mid-April.

In recent months, over 900 construction workers have already entered Israel from India through the B2B route. In addition to workers from India and Sri Lanka, approximately 7,000 have come from China and around 6,000 from Eastern Europe.
