New Delhi, September 4: Founder of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk on Monday said that the Third World War will likely be caused due to Artificial Intelligence (AI). He also said that, if required, governments across the globe will forcefully acquire AI systems developed by companies. These comments came after Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed Artificial Intelligence as the future and said the leader in this sphere will rule the world.

Even earlier, Musk had expressed concerns about the possibilities of Artificial Intelligence emerging as a lethal force against human beings. He tweeted on Monday saying that all powerful countries, including China and Russia will compete for superiority and it is highly probable this will eventually lead to the Third World War. He also tweeted a report by The Verge which includes the Russian President’s recent comments about AI.

In reply to his own post, Musk said, the war might ‘be initiated not by the country leaders, but one of the AI’s, if it decides that a preemptive strike is the most probable path to victory’.

Responding to a comment which said Governments are inefficient in creating AI and it is only corporate firms that will build a military of AI, Musk said, Government need not follow normal laws and if necessary can obtain AIs developed by these companies ‘at gunpoint’.

President Putin while addressing students talked openly about Artificial Intelligence and called it the future not just for Russia, but the whole humankind. He said although AI comes with ‘colossal opportunities’, it also comes with threats that are unpredictable. ‘Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world,’ he added.

Although not directly a related issue Musk commented about the recent spat with North Korea. Host and producer of Seattle’s C895 Radio, Seth Bolin said it is a weird thought that Artificial Intelligence and not North Korea will be the root of a massive war. To this the Tesla founder expressed his opinion about the issue and said North Korea launching a nuclear missile would be suicide as South Korea, the United States and China would immediately invade and end the regime.

Musk was recently involved in a war of words with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, in which he said the latter’s understanding about Artificial Intelligence is limited. Zuckerberg’s Facebook is a leading investor in Silicon Valley’s AI project and he said he is optimistic about the technology.
