New Delhi: A violent attack occurred outside Heaton Park Synagogue in Crumpsall, north of Manchester, in northwest England, United Kingdom, on Thursday, 02 October 2025, during Yom Kippur (the holiest day on the Jewish calendar). According to police, a man first rammed his car into people outside the place of worship, then got out and stabbed a man.

Two people have died, and three are in a serious condition.

Keir Starmer calls meeting of emergency committee

According to initial reports, the suspect is a 30-year-old man who is alive and has been taken to a hospital for treatment. The incident has been declared a “major accident,” and an investigation is ongoing. The local Jewish community has strongly condemned the attack, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called a meeting of the emergency committee, Cabinet Office Briefing Rooms (COBRA). The attack is being seen in the context of rising anti-Semitic violence. Andy Burnham, mayor of the Greater Manchester region, told BBC Radio that the threat has been averted for now.

Shocked by the attack: Starmer

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is currently attending a summit of European leaders in Copenhagen. In a post on X, he said he was shocked by the attack. He stressed that the incident on a holy day like Yom Kippur makes it even more horrific. Starmer is scheduled to chair a COBRA meeting after returning from the summit.
