Is Pakistan developing a missile that can target Indian bases in Andaman and Nicobar? Recently, the United States said Pakistan is developing long-distance ballistic missiles that can reach the target beyond South Asia. It is a serious concern for India if America’s statement against Pakistan’s missile programme is true.
The United States banned Pakistan’s long-distance ballistic missile programme on December 18. Jonathan Finer, Deputy National Security Advisor of the United States, said that the Pakistan’s missile’s range to which it is developing, can reach nations which are located in South Asia.
Despite the ban, Matthew Miller, Spokesperson for the United States Department of State, said the US has imposed a ban on four companies which are helping in Pakistan’s missile programme. The United States has also expressed its concerns over the two missiles which have become the talking point. Pakistan is developing Shahen-3 and Ababeel while keeping in mind its arch rival-India.
Pakistani experts are of the view that the development of missiles is not a competition with any nation but they want to keep Pakistan ahead in comparison to India’s defense system. Over US sanction, Pak expert Dr Mansoor Ahmed said Pakistan has not tested any missile that reaches beyond the range of India. He said the worry of the United States is ‘baseless’ as the nation has not developed any InterContinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) like India.
The distance between India-Pakistan border and Andaman and Nicobar is 2885 kilometres. The range of two missiles, which have turned into a nightmare for the United States, is 2800 kilometres. Shahen-3 is a medium range ballistic missile but a few reports suggested that its range is 2750 kilometres which can hit long-range targets. This missile has been designed for both-conventional and nuclear warheads. This is stage two and a soil fuel missile.
Pakistan’s second missile is Ababeel which is capable of targeting a range of 2200 kilometres. This is stage three and a soil fuel missile. Like Shaheen-III, this nuclear missile has been designed for nuclear warheads. It is equipped with MIRV Technology that makes it capable of striking multiple targets.
