New Delhi: In a matter of shock for India and China, Pakistan, under the leadership of Shehbaz Sharif has made a surprising proposal aimed at improving its relations with the Donald Trump’s United States. According to media reports, Pakistan has offered US President Donald Trump the construction of the Pasni Port on the Arabian Sea coast. This port would be located near Balochistan’s Gwadar District, where the Chinese-built and operated Gwadar Port already exists. The location of Pasni Port is particularly significant because it is just 300 kilometers from Iran’s Chabahar Port, which is being developed by India. Here are all the details you need to know about the updates on construction of the Pasni Port on the Arabian Sea coast and why it is a matter of attention for India.

What is Pakistan planning to do with US?

According to the Financial Times, advisors to Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir have approached top US officials and proposed this approximately $1.2 billion project. According to the proposal, the US would build and operate a terminal at the port, facilitating the export of Pakistan’s vital mineral resources. The US has also been requested to finance a rail network for this project, which will connect Pasni to Pakistan’s western mineral regions.

Why is US willing to invest in Pakistan?

The report also stated that this proposal came after Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Trump at the White House in September. During this meeting, Munir presented investment opportunities in Pakistan’s mineral sector and presented Trump with a wooden box filled with rare minerals. Following this, an American metal company also signed a $500 million deal with Pakistan.

Why India should be cautious about Pakistan Pasni port?

If the US builds a port in Pasni, it will not only pose a strategic challenge to Iran and India but could also complicate China-Pakistan relations. The US presence near the Gwadar Port, which is under Chinese influence, would create an uncomfortable situation for Beijing. Pakistan aims to keep the US in the region for the long term to maintain a strategic balance against India.
