Dhaka: What can be termed as bad news for the Yunus government, reports suggest that there has been upheaval in the Bangladesh army, and preparations are underway to overthrow Bangladesh Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman Recently, a top military officer of the Bangladesh Army, Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman (Quartermaster General), attempted to replace General Zaman, but he has not yet gained sufficient support. Lieutenant General Rahman is believed to be a supporter of Pakistan and Jamaat-e-Islami.
According to an Economic Times report, Lieutenant General Rahman has attempted to test his strength amid Bangladesh’s political instability and convened a meeting at the army headquarters. However, despite supporting the move to remove General Waqar, the meeting saw low attendance from senior officials.
Lieutenant General Rahman has been placed under the surveillance of Bangladesh’s military intelligence, DGFI. Observers monitoring Bangladesh have described the situation as tense. They have also warned that significant turmoil could be witnessed in Dhaka in the coming days.
It has been revealed that several officers of the Bangladesh Army were allegedly involved in this conspiracy. The names of 10 General Officer Commanding (GOC) have surfaced. Among them is Major General Mir Mushfiqur Rahman, who is currently the GOC of the 24th Infantry Division and the Area Commander of Chattogram. Mir Mushfiqur aspires to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.
The GOC of the 33rd Infantry Division and Area Commander of Comilla, Bangladesh, Major General Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq, has also supported Lieutenant General Rahman. Other alleged conspirators include the GOC of the 19th Infantry Division and Area Commander of Ghatail, Major General Hussain Muhammad Masihur Rahman; the GOC of the 66th Infantry Division and Area Commander of Rangpur, Major General Mohammad Kamrul Hasan; the GOC of the 10th Infantry Division and Area Commander of Cox’s Bazar, Major General Mohammad Asadullah Minhajul Alam; and the GOC of the 10th Infantry Division and Area Commander of Jalalabad, Major General ASM Ridwanur Rahman.
