New Delhi: The Muhammad Yunus-led Bangladesh government called the demolition of Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman‘s residence an internal matter and said India’s comment on the incident was “unexpected and inappropriate.” There have been reports of raging violence in Bangladesh since Wednesday night, with thousands of protesters setting fire to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence at 32 Dhanmondi in Dhaka.
India Condemned the Attack on Mujibur Rahman’s House
It was Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who led the country’s liberation struggle from this residence, which was later converted into a memorial. In 1971, it was from the same historic residence that Rahman declared Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan. On Thursday, India expressed sorrow over the demolition of the historic residence and stated that “this act of barbarism” must be strongly condemned.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “It is regrettable that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic residence was demolished on February 5. This residence was a symbol of the valiant resistance of the people of Bangladesh against forces of occupation and oppression. Those who value the freedom struggle that strengthened Bengali identity and pride are all aware of the significance of this residence for Bangladesh’s national consciousness.”
Bangladesh Reacts To India’s Comment:
According to the state news agency BSS, reacting to India’s comment, the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday that the Dhanmondi 32 incident pertains to the country’s internal affairs. Earlier, Bangladesh had also strongly protested to India regarding Sheikh Hasina’s speech, stating that it could impact bilateral relations.
