New Delhi: The relationship between Pakistan and Bangladesh has never been cordial since 1971; however, it improved after Sheikh Hasina stepped down as Prime Minister and Mohammad Yunus took office. The Mohammad Yunus-led Bangladesh government is often accused of supporting the radical elements in the country who have launched brutal assaults on the minorities. Hardline organizations like Jamaat-e-Islami are not in total control of the country and are getting all the required support from the government. The political relationship between the two countries has also improved over the last few months.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar is set to visit Bangladesh. This visit will take place after multiple meetings between Shehbaz Sharif and Mohammad Yunus on various platforms.
It is important to note that since 2008, not even a ministerial-level official from Pakistan has visited Bangladesh. The Sheikh Hasina government never had a good relationship with Pakistan; rather, Bangladesh’s ties with India were very strong. Things have now changed. In fact, even in areas bordering India’s Northeast, Bangladeshi officials have been seen accompanying individuals from Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI.
Such proximity is a matter of concern for India as well. The major concern is that the Pakistani agency could start plotting conspiracies in Northeast India. In the past, ISI has attempted to promote insurgency and separatism from Pakistan to the Northeast.
According to the reports, before the visit of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister, a meeting took place in Jeddah between Bangladesh’s advisor Mohammad Tauhid Hussain and Ishaq Dar. The Pakistani High Commission in Dhaka stated that the meeting was held in a very positive atmosphere. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) conference. During the meeting, both leaders agreed on strengthening bilateral relations.
