Dhaka: In recent days, former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina has said that the Yunus government is undermining democracy in the country while encouraging extremism. According to the reports, the remarks by Hasina have made the current dispensation in Dhaka uncomfortable. The Yunus government has not only expressed anger at Hasina over this but has also conveyed its displeasure to India. The government has reportedly summoned the Indian High Commissioner and registered its displeasure.
On Sunday, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma and expressed serious concern, describing Sheikh Hasina’s recent statements as provocative. The Bangladesh government official has told that India should not allow Hasina to make anti-Dhaka statements from its soil, as this harms relations between the two countries.
Sheikh Hasina has recently launched a scathing attack against Yunus government and questioned the intent of the interim government for preventing her party, the Awami League, from contesting elections. Hasina said that keeping the Awami League out of the electoral process is illegal. She added that the ban on the party should be lifted.
In an interview, Hasina said, “Since 1971, the people of Bangladesh have elected us (the Awami League) nine times. In such a situation, keeping the Awami League out of elections is madness. If such a big party stays away from the polls, the people of Bangladesh will not take the upcoming election and the government that emerges from it seriously.”
