Fact Check: Did Bashar al-Assad’s plane lost 6700 meters in seconds?

A frantic search is underway to locate the deposed Syrian President Assad.

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing Syria Crisis, Syria’s army command on Sunday, 08 December 2024 notified officers that President Bashar al-Assad’s rule has ended. Notably, this comes after Bashar al-Assad faced a rapid rebel offensive that took Syria, and the world by surprise. Syrian rebels said that Damascus was “now free of Assad”.

Meanwhile, a frantic search is underway to locate the deposed Syrian President Assad as rebel forces are questioning Syrian military officers and intelligence officials who may have knowledge of his whereabouts.

Apart from the rebels, open-source flight trackers have made a startling revelation. According to them, the last plane to leave Damascus was an Illyushin-76 aircraft, flight number Syrian Air 9218. The open-source flight trackers say that this aircraft was likely to be carrying Assad.

Flight number Syrian Air 9218 took off shortly before rebels seized control of the airport. The plane flew east, then deviated towards north, after that, its signals vanished from radars as it circled over Homs.

Rebels who fought against the Syrian leader stormed the presidential palace in Damascus and looted his belongings the videos of which are going viral on social media. The videos also show the rebels inside the presidential palace and on the streets celebrating the victory.

Rebels claim that Assad fled Damascus after the rebels entered the city. Since then, there is no news about Assad nor did he make any statement.

Now they are searching for Assad’s location as mystery deepens over the rumours of his plane being crashed as social media is thronged with several theories mostly indicating that Assad’s planes has crashed.

Unconfirmed information is being circulated about the sudden descent of the plane that was reportedly carrying Assad after it disappeared from radar and dropped suddenly from an altitude of over 3,650 meters to 1,070 meters in a few minutes, just outside Lebanese airspace north of Akkar. 3D flight radar data of the plane suspected of carrying Bashar al-Assad indicates that it crashed. The Syrian Air IL-76 aircraft’s altitude dropped suddenly, and it seems it was shot down.”.

NOTE: No, former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was not on the plane that lost 6,700 meters in seconds. The video shown here shows a plane fragment engulfed in a huge fire, but it does not involve the former president.

Some unverified videos showed a plane crashing and exploding in a ball of fire.
