China and India’s relationship has grown increasingly strained, and rising tensions along the border have pushed both nations into a new phase of military and strategic rivalry. The Chinese military is conducting extensive construction projects near the Indian border. As part of this project, the Chinese army is constructing new major airfields and related installations on the Tibetan Plateau. This expansion of Chinese Military capabilities allows them to reach the most remote location on the western boundary of the Himalayas. Additionally, the construction of a comprehensive Infrastructure Network on the Tibetan Plateau for both Civilian and Military uses will enable the Chinese Military to respond rapidly and effectively to threats during any potential conflict or war in the area.
The Wall Street Journal report has revealed chilling information. It has released satellite images to document the construction of 3 new dual-use facilities in the areas of Lhunze, Burang, and Tingri. The construction of these new facilities represents an increase in China’s military capabilities, providing the capability to base at least 72 Aircraft or Helicopters.
Over 100 satellite images from BlackSky were analyzed by The Wall Street Journal; BlackSky is a real-time space-based intelligence company that utilizes AI for the identification and detection of aircraft and other systems. The collection of images covers multiple sites (16 in total) that indicate that Chinese military operations continue to expand.
Various military aircraft are visible outside shelters or lined up on airfield aprons, including fighter jets, helicopters, and reconnaissance and attack drones, as reported by the Wall Street Journal(WSJ) report.
This infrastructure not only strengthens China’s position against India but also enhances Beijing’s ability to maintain firm control and governance in Tibet.
This region of China lies above the country’s long, contested border with India, a potential flashpoint in the region. The 2017 standoff between these countries and the heavy fighting in 2020 accelerated China’s military buildup in areas that were once considered too difficult to maintain a sustained presence. “In the 1970s, building an airstrip on the high grasslands of Bangda, near India’s northeastern border, involved 16,000 people and 89 deaths,” reads the report.
According to state-owned China Airport Construction Group Co., the building company, workers were building an airport that is 14,100 feet above sea level near the town of Tingri in the area where the Tibetan Plateau meets Mount Everest. Engineers worked hard to prevent the runway from cracking due to frost.
More than 300 miles to the east, construction teams are carving another airstrip into the mountains, facing icy winds, dizziness, and nosebleeds, relying heavily on oxygen cylinders. At a third site, workers moved 2.8 billion cubic feet of earth—enough to fill 32,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools—to level the terrain for a functional runway. While the aim of Chinese authorities in building these airports was to establish connectivity for remote citizens, the airports were built for military support as well, and are designed with both long runways and stronger storage facilities specifically for military planes.
