New Delhi: France wants to deploy an international force in Gaza to replace the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). The mission aims to disarm Hamas after the war ends and gradually hand over internal security in Gaza to the Palestinian Authority. This information comes from a draft proposal obtained by The Times of Israel. The proposal calls for the implementation of an international declaration issued in July, which calls for a two-state solution, the disarmament of Hamas, and the transfer of security in Gaza.
According to the report, several countries have been named to lead the mission, with Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Qatar being prioritised. The draft states that the mission will be conducted in accordance with the New York Declaration and under UN supervision. The aim is to gradually move towards regional leadership in security. The mission will be successful only when the situation normalises.
The New York Declaration on Gaza was put forward by France and Saudi Arabia in July, and later endorsed by several Arab countries, including Qatar and Egypt. Earlier this month, it was included in a UN General Assembly resolution. The declaration states that the signatory countries support the deployment of a temporary international stabilisation mission at the invitation of the Palestinian Authority.
It states, “This mission will provide for the protection of Palestinian civilians, support the capacity building of the Palestinian State and its security forces, and provide security guarantees for both Palestine and Israel. This will include monitoring the ceasefire and any future peace agreement. The sovereignty of both countries will be fully respected.”
