Washington: The United States Department of Defense’s annual report has made an important revelation about China’s military strength. According to the report, China’s H-20 stealth bomber is unlikely to be operational before the 2030s. According to the China Military Power Report, “China is developing a new generation of long-range bombers, likely named H-20… which could debut at any point in the next decade.”

Published with the approval of the US Congress, this report is released annually and is considered the most comprehensive classified assessment by the U.S. Department of Defense on China’s military advancements.

H-20: Major Power boost to China

Unveiled in the year 2016, the H-20 program was launched by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) as a “new generation of long-range bombers,” seen as Beijing’s answer to the US B-2 Spirit and B-21 Raider bombers.

According to the Pentagon, the H-20 will have a range of “over 10,000 km (approximately 6,214 miles),” enabling the PLA Air Force to cover the second island chain and the western Pacific region.

It is also stated that the bomber is expected to carry both conventional and nuclear weapons and will feature a “secret design.” While the PLA has disclosed very little about the highly classified bomber, the Pentagon’s latest estimates have increased the jet’s estimated range by 1,500 km compared to the 2021 report.

H-20 Can Launch Nuclear Bombs

According to the teasers released by the state-owned broadcaster CCTV of the H-20 in several programs, but no specific data has been shown. A strategic bomber capable of launching nuclear warheads is considered a key feature of the so-called nuclear triad, which, along with land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles and ballistic missile submarines, provides complete deterrence capability.
