BIG Tension for India, US as China secretly working on new nuclear weapon designs, this could lead to…

Beijing: China is secretly working on new nuclear weapon designs, as revealed by satellite images of its latest nuclear fusion reactor. The facility is located in the southwestern Chinese city of Mianyang. The potential development poses a significant threat to India, the United States, and other nations. Notably, Beijing already possesses the world’s third-largest nuclear arsenal and has the capability to launch nuclear weapons from land, air, and sea. China’s research into new warhead designs is a growing global concern.

Construction of a Massive Fusion Research Center

According to experts from two analytical organisations, the Dragon is constructing a large laser-ignited fusion research centre in Mianyang. This facility could aid in both nuclear weapons development and nuclear energy research. The satellite images showcased four external “arms” of the facility, likely housing laser bays, with a central experimental chamber. The chamber could contain hydrogen isotope targets, where high-energy lasers will converge to generate power.

Modelled After A US Nuclear Facility

China’s new potential nuclear facility appears similar in design to the USD 3.5 billion US National Ignition Facility (NIF) in California. This US facility achieved nuclear fusion energy breakeven in 2022. According to analysts at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), Beijing’s experimental chamber is 50 percent larger than that of NIF, which is currently the world’s largest.

Strategic Benefits for China

Nuclear policy expert William Alberque from the Henry L. Stimson Center said that an NIF-type facility could enhance China’s existing weapon designs, and even simulate future nuclear warheads without the need for actual nuclear testing.

In response to inquiries, China’s Foreign Ministry directed questions to “competent authorities,” and the Ministry of Science and Technology did not provide a reply.

Avoiding Traditional Nuclear Tests

Researchers can examine nuclear reactions by igniting fusion fuel, enabling them to avoid actual nuclear detonations. This approach allows China to enhance its nuclear capabilities while complying with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which has been signed by both China and the United States. In contrast to conventional nuclear tests performed in the open atmosphere, controlled fusion experiments offer important information about the dynamics of nuclear explosions while remaining within the bounds of the treaty.
