Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan has ramped up his attack against the Pakistan Army-led regime and accused Army Chief Asim Munir of targeting the women of his family, including his wife Bushra Bibi and sister Aleema Khan.
In a scathing social media post on Friday, the 72-year-old former Premier said that Pakistan is currently under “Asim Law”, and Field Marshal Asim Munir has “buried all morality”, while the country is being run by a “Dacoits and Duffers Alliance.”
“All the atrocities against me and my family are being committed under orders from Asim Munir. Our country is currently under ‘Asim Law’. Munir has buried all morality, running things under the ‘Dacoits and Duffers Alliance.’ The most glaring proof of this moral collapse is that even the women of my family are being targeted,” Khan wrote.
The cricketer-turned politician also accused Asim Munir of running a campaign to defame and malign his sister and wife.
“My sisters and my wife have nothing to do with politics. Aleema Khan only comes forward to convey my message. The campaign being waged against her is shameful and stands as undeniable proof of the cowardice and fear of the regime imposed on the country,” he said.
Comparing Munir with General Yahya Khan, Imran Khan said one man’s ego and lust for power led to a dark era of tyranny and oppression that permanently broke the country apart.
Khan, who has been in jail for more than two year after being convicted in multiple cases, asserted that his wife Bushra Bibi has no role in politics, and is paying the price for simply being his wife. “Never once has she asked me to nominate a minister, a ticket-holder, or a senator. She does not send political messages. She is in solitary confinement and has no contact with any political figure outside. She is only having to endure the ordeal of imprisonment because she is my wife,” he alleged.
The jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) expressed concern over his wife’s medical condition, saying that it has deteriorated to a level where where she “experiences dizziness while walking”. “To imprison Bushra Begum in political cases is conclusive evidence of the moral and religious degradation of Asim’s regime,” he said.
Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been jailed on corruption charges after being handed a prison term of 14 and 7 years, respectively, in the infamous Al-Qadir Trust case.
Khan and his wife are accused of allegedly misusing 190 million pounds, and the charges include money laundering and misdirecting public funds. However, the former star cricketer and his PTI party have refuted the allegations, claiming that Khan’s “only crime” was to challenge the might of Pakistan’s powerful military establishment.
Imran Khan, the former captain of the Pakistan cricket team that famously won the 1992 ICC World Cup, served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from August 2018 to April 2022.
