New Delhi: December 16 is a significant date for the people of the Indian subcontinent. On this day in 1971, over 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered to the Indian Army in Dhaka, marking the end of the war and the birth of Bangladesh as an independent nation. However, 54 years later, Bangladesh is facing the greatest crisis to its sovereignty and security.

Bangladesh has been witnessing an unprecedented crisis since Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign as the Prime Minister and flee the country. The tensions on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border have reached their peak. Reports suggest that Myanmar’s insurgent group, the Arakan Army (AA), has seized parts of Bangladesh’s Teknaf region. This area is not only strategically significant but also sensitive due to its proximity to Rohingya refugee camps and Bangladesh’s famous Saint Martin Island.

Myanmar’s Arakan Army Attacks Bangladesh

Multiple firefights have occurred between the Arakan Army and Bangladeshi forces along the border, according to a TV9 report. Local sources claim that the Arakan Army has taken control of some parts of Bangladeshi territory. However, the Bangladesh government has yet to issue any official statement on the matter.

Growing Power of the Arakan Army

What can be termed a matter of big worry, the Arakan Army has taken control of large parts of Myanmar’s Rakhine province, and now their sights are set on Bangladesh’s border areas. Following their success in regions like Maungdaw, their strategy has become extremely aggressive. According to a report by Manish Jha, the Arakan Army is trying to exploit Bangladesh’s weak borders to expand its influence over strategic areas like Saint Martin Island.
