The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation held its meeting in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, bringing together leaders from countries such as Turkey, Iran, Nigeria, Malaysia, and Indonesia. However, the interaction between Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Bangladesh’s interim government head, Mohammad Yunus, stood out. The meeting highlighted how Bangladesh, historically closer to India, appears to be tilting towards Pakistan. Apart from the main D-8 session, the two leaders also held a separate bilateral meeting. Pakistan used the platform to share how Bangladesh has taken steps to improve its relations with Islamabad.
Shehbaz Sharif revealed that goods arriving in Bangladesh from Pakistan no longer undergo physical inspections. Furthermore, the process for Pakistani citizens traveling to Bangladesh has been simplified. Previously, there was a dedicated security desk at Dhaka airport for Pakistani nationals, which has now been removed. Visa procedures have also become more streamlined. Additionally, both leaders agreed to enhance cultural ties, sports collaboration, academic exchanges, and student mobility.
Sharif also mentioned the visit of the Bangladeshi cricket team to Pakistan and cited a recent concert by a Pakistani music band in Dhaka as examples of the growing closeness between the two countries. These developments signify an increasingly strong bond between Bangladesh and Pakistan, a relationship that could be concerning for India.
This shift in Bangladesh’s stance is significant as India and Bangladesh have historically enjoyed friendly relations, which now appear to be weakening. India has traditionally maintained lower vigilance along its border with Bangladesh compared to its heavily guarded border with Pakistan. However, this growing Pakistan-Bangladesh partnership could facilitate the entry of Pakistan-backed terrorists into India through Bangladesh. Additionally, there are broader regional geopolitical concerns arising from these developments.
The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation is a group formed to promote economic cooperation between Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey. It was established in 1997 through the Istanbul Declaration at a summit of the heads of state/government.
The goals of the D-8 include expanding trade relations, improving the economic position of member countries in the global market, and increasing their influence in international decision-making.
The eight countries in the D-8 collectively have a population of over a billion people, creating a large market. Together, they have a combined GDP of around 5 trillion dollars, making the D-8 an important player in the global economy. The group regularly participates in discussions on economic and other important issues.
