The Pakistani government has signed a defense agreement with China to purchase eight Hangor-class submarines. Four of these submarines are being built in China, while the remaining will be built in Karachi.

China has completed the completion of the Pakistani Navy’s fourth Hungor-class submarine. The Pakistani Navy announced on Wednesday that the Chinese-built Pakistani submarine, Ghazi, was launched from the Shuangliu base in Wuhan. It said this will help maintain peace in the region. The Pakistani government has signed a defense agreement with China to purchase eight Hungor-class submarines. Four of these submarines are being built in China, while the remaining four will be built in Karachi, Pakistan, by the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works Limited.

In a statement, the Pakistani Navy described the launch of Ghazi as another important milestone. It said that all four submarines being built in China are now undergoing rigorous sea trials and are in the final stages of being handed over to Pakistan. The Navy said that the Hungor-class submarines will play an important role in maintaining peace and stability in the region. Officials from both countries attended the launching ceremony held in Wuhan.

Advanced weapons will be installed in Ghazi submarine

According to a statement issued by the ISPR, the media wing of the Pakistani military, these submarines will be equipped with advanced weapons and sensors that will enable them to engage targets from a distance. The Hangor-class submarine is a diesel-electric attack submarine. It is equipped with an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, allowing it to remain underwater for extended periods of time. It is an export version of China’s Type 039 Yuan-class submarine.

Getting submarine amid tension with India

Pakistan is acquiring these submarines at a time of tense relations with India. In May of this year, India and Pakistan engaged in four days of deadly military clashes, during which both countries used fighter jets, artillery, missiles, and drones. After being defeated by India in the four-day war, Pakistan is rapidly strengthening its armed forces. For this, it is looking towards Beijing, which has long been Islamabad’s arms supplier. Pakistan purchased 60 percent of China’s arms exports during the period 2020-2024.
