Bhagdad, June 9: At least 8 people were killed and over 30 wounded after a massive blast rocked Bhagdad, capital city of Iraq. The explosion was reported on Thursday in Baghdad’s Al-Jidida, an eastern district of Bhagdad. According to initial reports, the blast targeted a commercial street in the area. Pictures and videos shared by local residents on social media reveal a huge column of black smoke billowing over the area.

As per the reports, the bomb was placed in a car. The explosion took place at a time when Iraqi forces are trying to dislodge Islamic State militants from Falluja, their stronghold just west of Baghdad. According to Al Mayadin TV, another blast took place near a military base in the north Bhagdad. The report further says the total death toll from the two incidents stands at 25 while over 60 are injured. At least 70 people were killed in a string of bombings inside and outside the Iraqi capital as well as in Sadr City on May 17. Islamic State militants had claimed the responsibility of the terror strike.
