Naveed Akram, a 24-year-old of Pakistani origin, has been identified as one of the two shooters.

New Delhi: In a major development, the two gunmen behind the Bondi Beach shooting have been identified as father and son. During a press conference, New South Wales police commissioner Mal Lanyon stated the two males – 50-year-old and 24-year-old – have been identified as the only shooters involved in the attack.

The 50-year-old father, Sajid Akram, was shot dead by police at the scene, while his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, was critically injured and remains hospitalised, CBS news cited New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon saying.

According to the New York Post, an ISIS flag was found in their vehicle. Following the incident, the Al-Murad Institute has removed its website and social media accounts. The younger suspect, Naveed, studied religion at an Islamic centre in Australia that has connections to other Muslim-run organisations in the country.

Shooting during Jewish festival

On Sunday, the shooting unfolded at Bondi Beach, where more than 1,000 people had gathered to celebrate Hanukkah. According to the reports, the attackers indiscriminately targeted crowds at the popular tourist hotspot. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the Australian government and accused it of “pouring oil on the fire of antisemitism” in the period leading up to the shooting.
