The President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto has arrived in India to attend the country’s Republic Day celebrations. Alongside this, discussions are underway regarding a defense deal between the two nations. India and Indonesia are working on a framework agreement aimed at defense cooperation and technology sharing. This defense deal could pave the way for significant projects, including surface-to-surface missiles, air defense systems, and submarine construction technology transfers.
According to a report by The Economic Times, sources indicate that the proposed agreement will provide a credible and legal framework for high-level technology transfers and joint production of weapon systems. Detailed discussions are expected during President Prabowo Subianto’s four-day visit to India as the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations.
The report also reveals that ongoing talks about the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system could be formalized under this agreement. The Indonesian side has expressed interest in technology transfers related to this system. The agreement will also add a layer of facilitation for Russia, which is an equal partner in the BrahMos program, on a government-to-government basis.
According to The Economic Times, Indonesia has agreed to a confidentiality clause with both the Russian and Indian parties regarding the purchase of BrahMos missiles. This clause is designed to prevent any theft or misuse of the technology. Various reports reveal that discussions are underway for at least three major projects: the BrahMos missile system, an air defense system developed by a private sector company, and collaboration on submarine technology.
The air defense system being considered for potential co-production could lead to a significant contract. This system is particularly appealing because it can be deployed on both land and Indonesian naval warships, enhancing its versatility and strategic value.
