Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Indian-origin democratic socialist politician, was sworn in as mayor of New York City, as reported by news agency AP. Mamdani assumed office as New York City’s mayor shortly after midnight Thursday, taking the oath at a historic, decommissioned subway station in Manhattan. He achieved a remarkable win in the highly contested New York City mayoral race, becoming the first South Asian and Muslim to be elected to the role of mayor of the largest city in the United States. In a brief speech, Mamdani said,” This is truly the honor and the privilege of a lifetime,” as reported by the news agency AP.
Speaking about his personal life, Zohran Mamdani’s mother, Mira Nair, is a renowned filmmaker. Meanwhile, his father is the academic Mahmood Mamdani. She directed several popular Hindi films, including Monsoon Wedding and Salaam Bombay. Mamdani speaks fluent Hindi and even ran portions of his campaign in Hindi to engage Indian-origin voters in the community.
