London, June 16: British labor MP Jo Cox is in critical condition after she was shot twice and stabbed by a man in her constituency. The 41-year-old British lawmaker was rushed to a nearby hospital where she is been operated. According to eyewitness Cox, was left bleeding on the floor by her attacker. One of the man with Cox also suffered slight injuries.
The attacker has been identified as a 52-year-old man was arrested near Market Street, Birstall, West Yorkshire Police was quoted by the BBC. At the time of the incident the MP was holding a weekly advice surgery in her constituency. The MP was rushed by an ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary, where armed police are stationed outside.
People present at the spot were screaming as soon as the attacker stabbed Cox. Clarke Rothwell a nearby cafe owner, who witnessed the attack reportedly said, he heard a “loud noise that sounded like a baloon burst”. Read Also: (Orlando shooter wrote chilling Facebook posts from inside club)
He said, “When I looked around I saw a man in his 50s with a white baseball cap and an old fashioned gun in his hand. He shot Cox twice”.
After Cox felt on floor he then shot her again. People who tried to protect Cox had to wrestle with the attacker as he also wielded knife at them, BBC reported. Another eyewitness said that Mr Cox a mother of two was left lying on the floor for few minutes as she was bleeding profusely.
Another eyewitness also claimed that the assailant after attacking the lawmaker shouted “Britain First”.
After the news started surfacing around Britain Prime Minister David Cameron also tweeted to express his concern. He tweeted “Our thoughts and prayers are with Jo and her family”.
Cox, a senior lawmaker was born in Batley and was elected in 2015. She completed her education at Heckmondwike Grammar School and graduated from Cambridge University in 1995. A former head of policy for Oxfam, Cox also worked as an advisor to a policy making firm.
