Thousand Oaks, California: The gunman who killed at least 13 people at a bar in California and was later shot dead by the police has been identified. Ian David Long, a 28-year-old veteran of the Marine Corps had previous run-ins with the law shot nearly 30 rounds of fire.
According to eyewitnesses, Long was dressed in black and was wearing glasses when he walked into the bar that was filled with people. John Hedge, a witness while speaking to media said, “I started hearing these big pops. Pop, pop, pop. There was probably three or four, I hit the ground.
Another witness Harrah said, “This guy just came out of nowhere and came out with a gun and shot people in Thousand Oaks, California. And that’s what’s really blowing my mind, it’s a really safe area.”
Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said he believed that the gunman killed himself. However, Dean said he did not know of the shooter’s motive, and he did not know of any connection between Long and the Borderline bar. He added that officials found a Glock .45-caliber handgun at the scenethat was purchased legally. The gunman used an extended magazine in this shooting, Dean added.
Police said Long was suffering from some sort of mental illness. A mental health specialist had met Long in April this year and ultimately decided not to detain him under laws pertaining to his mental health. Long was on active duty with the US Marine Corps from August 2008 to March 2013, according to Defense Department records.
