What Exactly Happened?

According to the report, the incident took place at Nanaksar Gurdwara around 5 am local time when an unidentified man tried to enter the prayer hall. He was immediately detained as 'quick acting witnesses' constrained him before police arrived. When two male patrons of the Gurudwara tried to stop the accused, he attacked with a knife and stabbed them. The victims, aged 75 and 51, sustained injuries but are out of danger.

What We Know About the Suspect So Far

Acting Inspector Eric Stewart of Edmonton Police Service, during a press briefing, said that the 27-year-old man is a historysheeter and was released from a federal institution on August 20. He was serving a sentence for aggravated assault and attacking a peace officer.

The man has a significant history of violent offences dating back to 2015. The accused was captured on CCTV walking in traffic on a highway around 4.49 am local time. The police received the distress calls about the knife attack at around 5.15 am.

Canadian PM Expressed Shock

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reacted to the stabbing incident and expressed shock. "The attack at the Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton this morning is appalling. My thoughts are with the two people who were injured and the wider community that is shaken by this terrible event," he wrote in a post on X.

Carney ensured that no individual should feel unsafe in their place of worship. "I want to thank the Edmonton Police Service for their swift response," he said.

It is to be noted that the knife attack comes a week after cops said that they were checking threat calls made to two Sikh gurdwaras in Calgary, which is located two hours away from Nanaksar Gurdwara.

Sikh Body Demanded Security Review

The World Sikh Organization, based in Canada, reacted to the knife attack at the Nanaksar Gurdwara and expressed shock and concern, saying, "We are asking gurdwaras across Canada to review and strengthen their security procedures and to remain vigilant."

The Nanaksar Gurdwara, which is approx. 30 years old, was temporarily closed after the incident as investigators carried out their probe.
