Researchers focused on how canola oil affects the brain health for which they experimented on six-month-old mouse models to find out the oil’s influence on the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease. The early investigation made use of olive oil on the same mouse model. However, in that experiment, the researchers found that Alzheimer mice fed on a diet rich in olive oil showed reduced levels of amyloid plaques and phosphorylated tau–responsible for communication between brain cells, and experienced memory improvement. In their latest work which was to find canola oil’s influence on the brain’s health of Alzheimer mice, one of the first differences observed was the weight gain. Maze tests to analyze learning and memory skills uncovered that mice that had consumed canola oil over six months suffered impairments in working memory.
“Even though canola oil is a vegetable oil, we need to be careful before we say that it is healthy. Based on the evidence from this study, canola oil should not be thought of as being equivalent to oils with proven health benefits,” Medical News Today quoted Dr. Domenico Praticò, professor at Temple University in the US as saying.
