Two Navy helicopters collided mid-air at Malaysia’s Lumut Naval Base, resulting in the loss of at least 10 lives. The incident occurred during a rehearsal for a Royal Malaysian Navy parade. Videos on social media showed the moment of collision at the Lumut Naval Base. At least 10 crew members were aboard the two helicopters, Malaysian news media outlets reported. Local media outlets have said that there are no known survivors.

The footage of the clash has gone viral on social media. It showed one of the helicopters clipped the rotor of the other leading to the crash. One helicopter crashed onto a running track and another crashed into a swimming pool nearby.

In a statement, the Navy confirmed the death of all 10 crew members aboard the aircraft involved in the accident, news agency Reuters reported. “All victims were confirmed dead at the scene and sent to the Lumut army base hospital for identification,” the Navy said.

The Royal Malaysian Navy also released a statement where they said that two helicopters, identified as models HOM (M503-3) and Fennec (M502-6), had collided and crashed at 9:32am (local time). They said that the choppers were rehearsing for the Navy’s 90th anniversary event scheduled to take place from May 3-5.

Photos showed the Eurocopter model heavily mangled in the wreckage on the naval base stadium track with rescue personnel surrounding it as well as various debris.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim sent his condolences to the families of the victims, saying “the nation mourns the heart-wrenching and soul-wrenching tragedy”. “I was informed that an immediate investigation will be carried out by the Ministry of Defense, especially TLDM (Royal Malaysian Navy), to find the cause of the crash,” he said.
