Is China secretly buying oil from Iran? A US newspaper has made this claim, citing sources in various countries. The report states that despite US sanctions, China is purchasing oil from Iran through a kind of barter system (goods for goods) and in return is working on several infrastructure projects there.

According to the report, Iranian oil shipments under this barter system in return, Chinese state-owned companies build roads, bridges, and other infrastructure projects in Iran. The newspaper also claimed that a secretive Chinese insurance company is involved in this scheme.

The newspaper quoted sources as saying that last year, oil payments worth about US$8.4 billion (about Rs 70,000 crore) were made through this barter system, which was used to fund Chinese projects in Iran.

Earlier, in August, a CBS News investigation revealed that China was secretly importing oil from Iran to circumvent US sanctions through a “shadow fleet.” This is a secret fleet of ships that appears to be carrying one thing but carries a different cargo.

Iran signed the JCPOA nuclear deal with the United States, Britain, Germany, France, China, and Russia in 2015. Under this agreement, Iran was granted sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program.

Trump imposed tough sanctions on Iran

However, in May 2018, then US President Donald Trump withdrew from the JCPOA and reimposed tough sanctions on Iran. In response, Iran gradually abandoned its commitments under the agreement and began lifting restrictions on uranium enrichment and nuclear research.

These revelations in the report have come at a time when America and its allies have already taken a tough stand on Iran’s nuclear program.
