New Delhi: The Xi Jinping-led Chinese government has approved the construction of the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet. The river enters Arunachal Pradesh, where it is called the Siang. In addition, it is known as the Brahmaputra in Assam and the Jamuna in Bangladesh. After the construction of this dam built on the Tibetan Plateau, it will impact millions of people in India and Bangladesh.

It will also affect India’s national security and the environment. The dam could potentially cause flash floods or water shortages. Moreover, in the event of a war, this could give China a significant advantage.

Countering China with the Siang Dam

Arunachal Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister, Chowna Mein has said that the Siang Dam will counter China’s mega project. This dam will be constructed for national security purposes. Mein said, “We will first create a pre-visibility report (PVR). If the project proves beneficial, the dam will be constructed. If not, it will not be built.”

The proposed ‘Siang Hydropower Project’ in Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh has the potential to generate 11,000 megawatts of electricity.

People Opposing the Project

There has been strong opposition by the residents to the Siang Dam project. Over 350 individuals and organizations have appealed to President Droupadi Murmu, requesting the withdrawal of paramilitary forces sent to Arunachal Pradesh for the dam survey.

Under the banner of the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF), people from several villages are protesting against the dam. They argue that the project will displace thousands of people and cause significant environmental damage.

“China’s Planned Dam Will Make Brahmaputra Ecosystem Fragile”: Assam CM Himanta Sarma

China’s plan to build a mega dam on the Brahmaputra could make the entire ecosystem that depends on the river fragile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned, adding that India has already communicated its concern to Beijing.

When he was asked about the dam’s impact on Assam and Arunachal Pradesh during a media interaction in Guwahati on the first day of the New Year, Sarma said, “This matter is already within our notice. Government of India has already communicated its concern to the Chinese side. And I am sure that in the dialogue process which is presently going on between India and China, this will be definitely raised by the Indian side.
