Beijing: China caused a flutter and confusion by flying two sixth-generation stealth fighter jets simultaneously last month, putting the world’s major powers in a state of panic. Military experts around the world are still speculating about their strength.
It is said that China’s fighter jet J-36 can change the scene of modern warfare. Experts say that this sixth-generation fighter jet can serve as a command centre in the air for the army of combat drones. This will allow hundreds of combat drones to be guided in future warfare.
The Chinese PLA flew these fighter jets on December 26, the 131st birthday of its founder Mao Zedong, to send a big message to its enemies. One of these fighter aircraft has drawn praise from many defence experts.
China’s military released a video on New Year’s Eve, showing a picture of a new fighter jet. Military experts say that this is a clear message that China’s sixth-generation aircraft is being built and they have named it J-36. Military experts said that many new lethal technologies have been used in these aircraft.
What can China’s J-36 fighter jet do?
John Waters, a former US Air Force pilot and F-16 pilot, says that this Chinese aircraft is very special because of its stealth capabilities hence it will not be easily detected by the enemy’s radar. He compared it to America’s B-21 stealth nuclear bomber.
“These giant planes, which don’t have a lot of acrobatics, aren’t meant for one-on-one combat,” Waters said. Another US expert, Bill Steinman said that the period of one-on-one combat of fighter jets is now obsolete adding that it is the era of beyond-visual-range missiles and advanced sensors.
Steinman speculated that the main task of China’s J-36 fighter jet would be to attack and destroy enemy air bases. This includes fighter aircraft, tankers, support aircraft like (Airborne early warning and control) AWACS, as well as aircraft carriers in the sea.
Peter Leyton, a former Australian Air Force officer, says that China’s J-36 aircraft looks like Russia’s MiG-31 in terms of design. It is known for its long-range and high-speed attacks.
Leyton said the J-36’s role is to protect China’s long-range strategic bombers. Also, this fighter can provide air defence in areas where the ground air defence system is not present. It can be deployed on alert mode anywhere on the ground and can easily deal with threats of any magnitude. New Zealand’s military expert Lu Gu Wei said that China’s PL-17 missiles are capable of striking up to 400 km from air to air, that too at 4 times the speed of sound.
Lu Gu said that China’s J-36 aircraft will not be ahead on the war front but will become a centre for a major combat system due to its value. This sixth-generation fighter aircraft can interlink other lethal air warriors such as combat drones, J-20 and J-35A fighter jets. It will play the role of a command centre in a way. It will be supported by AWACS.
He said that its super-powerful radar and sensors will give it the power to sniff out stealth fighter jets from a distance. These aircraft will also be able to land on aircraft carriers.
