Christian to become minority in US by…, this religion will become majority population in America, is it Muslim?

The world’s population has now crossed 8 billion, and two religions have over 2 billion followers each. Islam has the largest number of followers, followed by Christianity. A recent report by the Pew Research Center has revealed some surprising insights about religious trends, especially focusing on Islam and Christianity. According to the report, in 2020, around 64 per cent of Americans identified as Christians. However, by 2070, this number could drop to 46 per cent, meaning Christians will no longer be the majority in the US. In 2020, 30 per cent of Americans were non-Christians, with 6 per cent belonging to other religions.

Changing religious trends

Christians, on average, are older than people in other religious groups. Around half of young adults in their early 20s identify as Christian, while more than 75 per cent of those in their early 60s do. The percentage is even higher among older generations. As older Christians pass away and younger, non-religious individuals raise their children without religion, the overall Christian population will naturally decrease since there will be more Christian deaths than births.

Meanwhile, other religions are expected to grow and could make up 12 per cent of the US population by 2070, mainly due to ongoing immigration trends.

The report also highlights that 34 per cent of people raised as Christians will leave the faith by the age of 30. Among them, 3 per cent will adopt a different religion, while 31 per cent will have no religious affiliation. On the other hand, 21 per cent of people who grew up without a religion will convert to Christianity. This ongoing shift means that by 2050, Christianity’s share in the US will keep declining, and by 2060, it will fall below 50 per cent.

US Religious Composition in 2070

By 2070, the Christian population in the US. is expected to drop to 46 per cent, making them no longer the majority, but still the most common religious group. Non-Christians will grow to 41 per cent, while other religious groups will make up 13 per cent. These estimates are based on current trends in religious switching, birth rates, migration, and mortality rates.
